Frequently Asked Questions
How many wineries are there in the United States?
There are 18,090 federally licensed wine and beverage producers in the United States, spread across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Of those, 12,527 are classified as wineries; the rest are cideries, meaderies, breweries and distilleries that hold a federal wine permit. The figures come from the most recent Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau permit list.
Which state has the most wineries?
California has the most by a wide margin, with 6,400 licensed producers. It is followed by Washington (1,428), Texas (1,013), Oregon (995) and New York (855). California alone accounts for more than a third of every winery listing in the country.
Is wine made in all 50 states?
Yes. Every state and the District of Columbia has at least one federally licensed wine producer, including Alaska, Hawaii and North Dakota. Wine grapes are not grown commercially everywhere, so some producers work with fruit brought in from other states, or make cider, mead and fruit wine.
What is an AVA?
An American Viticultural Area is a federally designated wine grape growing region defined by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. There are 280 of them in the United States. If a wine label names an AVA, at least 85 percent of the grapes in the bottle must have been grown inside it.
What is the difference between a wine region and an AVA?
An AVA is a legal boundary set by the federal government and printable on a label. A wine region is how people actually describe an area, and it may contain several AVAs or cross state lines. This guide organises listings both ways: 40 wine regions for browsing, and 280 AVAs when you need precision.
Do I need an appointment to visit a winery?
Often, yes. Many small producers are appointment only, and tasting room hours change with the season. Every listing links to the winery’s own website, so confirm directly before you travel.
Is the information on this site current?
Listings are built from federal permit records and each producer’s own website. Federal records do not include websites, phone numbers or hours, so some listings are thinner than others until the winery fills them in. Always confirm details with the winery before visiting.
Can a winery claim or correct its listing?
Yes, and it is free. Any owner or authorised representative can claim their winery listing to correct the details, add a website and social links, and earn a verified badge. Enhanced and Featured upgrades are available for wineries that want more visibility.
Details are collected from public records and the producer's own website and may be outdated. theUSAwineguide.com is not responsible for outdated or inaccurate information; confirm hours and availability with the winery before visiting.
