Arkansas Wine, in Brief

Arkansas has been making wine since Swiss and German immigrants planted vines around Altus in the 1870s, and the families who founded those wineries still run several of them. The Altus area along the Arkansas River is the heart of it, with a handful of producers now spread across the Ozarks and the northwest corner.

The style is honest and traditional: native and hybrid grapes, sweet and semi-sweet wines with a loyal following, and a growing number of dry wines from Cynthiana and Chambourcin.
