Ohio Wine, in Brief

Ohio was America's leading wine state in the mid-1800s, when Nicholas Longworth's Catawba from the Cincinnati hills was famous on both sides of the Atlantic. Today the industry has two centres: the Lake Erie shore and islands in the north, where the lake extends the season, and the Ohio River hills in the south.

The Grand River Valley east of Cleveland is the quality leader, growing Riesling, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir; the islands around Put-in-Bay are the visitor favourite.
