Alaska Wine, in Brief

Alaska has no commercial vineyards; the growing season is too short for grapes. What it has instead is a small, resourceful group of producers making wine from wild berries, rhubarb and honey, plus meaderies and a few wineries that ferment imported grape juice.

The results are more interesting than they sound. Fireweed honey mead, blueberry and salmonberry wines, and rhubarb wines that drink like a crisp white are the signatures.
