Missouri Wine, in Brief
Missouri has one of the deepest wine histories in the country. German immigrants built the Hermann wine district in the 1840s, the state was the second-largest producer before Prohibition, and Augusta became the very first American Viticultural Area in 1980, eight months before Napa.
Norton is the state grape and the backbone of Missouri's dry reds; Vignoles, Chardonel and Traminette make its best whites. The wineries along the Missouri River between St. Louis and Hermann are among the most visited in the Midwest.
