Michigan Wine, in Brief
Michigan is one of the best cool-climate wine states in the country, thanks to the lake effect that moderates winters along the western shore. Two areas lead: the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas near Traverse City in the north, and the fruit belt of the southwest around Fennville and Lake Michigan Shore.
Riesling is the flagship, backed by Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc and sparkling wine. Traverse City has become a proper wine-country destination with orchards, cherries and lake views.
