Texas Wine, in Brief
Texas is the fifth-largest wine-producing state and one of the most visited, thanks to the Hill Country west of Austin. Along Highway 290 between Johnson City and Fredericksburg, dozens of tasting rooms sit a few minutes apart in a landscape of live oaks and limestone, and the town of Fredericksburg has become a full wine-country destination.
Most of the grapes, though, are grown 300 miles northwest on the High Plains near Lubbock, where elevation, dry air and cool nights suit Mediterranean and Spanish varieties. Tempranillo has become the state's signature red, with Viognier, Roussanne, Mourvèdre and Tannat close behind.

Planning a Visit to Texas Wine Country
Fredericksburg is the base for the Hill Country; book tastings on weekends, when the 290 corridor gets crowded, and consider a weekday for a calmer visit. Wildflower season in March and April is the prettiest time; summer afternoons are very hot. The High Plains wineries near Lubbock are quieter and closer to the vines.
Best time to go: March to May and October to November
