North Carolina Wine, in Brief
North Carolina has two wine industries. In the Piedmont and foothills, especially the Yadkin Valley northwest of Winston-Salem, estate wineries grow Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Viognier and Petit Verdot on old tobacco land and have built a real wine-tourism circuit. In the east and along the coast, muscadine wineries carry on a tradition that dates to the colonial era.
The state also has the country's largest winery by visitors, on the Biltmore Estate at Asheville.
