Iowa Wine, in Brief

Iowa rebuilt its wine industry from almost nothing in the early 2000s, and now has vineyards in most counties. The grapes are the cold-hardy hybrids developed at Minnesota and Cornell: Marquette, Frontenac, La Crescent, Brianna and Edelweiss, which shrug off winters that would kill Cabernet.

The wineries are small, rural and social, often with live music and food on weekends, and the wines are fresh, fruity and frequently off-dry.
