Washington Wine, in Brief
Washington is the second-largest wine state and grows almost all of its grapes east of the Cascades, in the dry, sunny Columbia Valley, where long summer days and cold nights produce rich, structured Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Riesling. The tasting rooms, meanwhile, are split between the vineyard towns of Walla Walla, Yakima, Prosser and the Tri-Cities and the Seattle suburb of Woodinville, where more than a hundred producers pour wine within a few miles of each other.
Walla Walla is the state's best wine-country town, with a walkable downtown of tasting rooms and estate wineries in the surrounding hills.

Puget Sound is the one AVA west of the mountains.
