Oregon Wine, in Brief
Oregon built its reputation on Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley, where a cool, wet climate and volcanic and marine sediment soils produce wines with a following around the world. The valley's towns, Dundee, Newberg, McMinnville and Carlton, sit among the best vineyards and make a compact, easy wine trip an hour from Portland.
Beyond the Willamette, southern Oregon around the Rogue and Umpqua valleys is warmer and grows Tempranillo, Syrah and Cabernet, while the Columbia Gorge and Walla Walla Valley stretch across from Washington.
